What is Pico de Gallo?

Pico de gallo is a chunky blend of jalapenos, onions, cilantro, and, lime juice, and tomato that can be flavored with a variety of different spices based on taste. The texture of a pico is much different than a classic salsa. Pico is diced and mixed together with the chunks remaining in tact for hearty, healthy loads of flavor. Salsa is blended into a puree, giving a much different texture and appearance.

How hot does Pico Get?

This truly depends on your taste. Jalapenos are the traditional pepper used to flavor pico, but you can go a little spicier by adding in seranos or even habaneros, if you’re really looking for heat. A crushed red pepper or cayenne spice is often added as well, or you can throw in garlic for to add a bit of a different flavor blend without quite as much heat.

This recipe will get you started with a great base, and then there’s a lot of fun that can be had with the flavors of pico, it’s just a matter of taste!
